San Francisco is launching a guaranteed income program that will provide direct cash payments to financially unstable residents who identify as transgender.

The program, known as Guaranteed Income for Transgender People (G.I.F.T.), provides “economically marginalized transgender people with unrestricted, monthly guaranteed income as a way to combat poverty,” the program’s online portal says.

Transgender “BIPOC” applicants for the program will be prioritized above non-minority trans individuals, the program’s website adds.

In total, 55 transgender residents will be selected to participate in the program and will receive $1,200 every month for up to 18 months.

Participants will also receive “wrap-around” services, such as “gender-affirming care,” gynecological care and more.

San Francisco has several other guaranteed income programs, including one for struggling artists and another for expectant mothers who are of Black or Pacific Islander descent.

Further south in Palm Springs, another guaranteed income for transgender residents was launched earlier this year.

Our Guaranteed Income Programs allow us to help our residents when they need it most as part of our City’s economic recovery and our commitment to creating a more just city for all,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement, according to The Center Square. “We know that our trans communities experience much higher rates of poverty and discrimination, so this program will target support to lift individuals in this community up. We will keep building on programs like this to provide those in the greatest need with the financial resources and services to help them thrive.”

The new program, which will be accepting applications over the next month, is being funded as part of the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, The Center Square added. It will be allocated $2 million over two years.
